Softest, most horse-friendly way to teach lunging?

You should teach walk on, a clucking noise for trot and a kissing noise for canter......I teach the voice command whoa in the round pen and for ground work but try and faze it out when riding.......My horses will launch you if you say whoa as they stop just from the word and I dont like it.....they are real good in listening to my body and seat for whoa but once in awhile when they here someone say it.....Ill get an unexpected stop....
