Why did God put the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil in Eden in the first place?

Knowing that by eating of it, mankind would fall and suffering would befall all their descendants, why would God put a temptation like that in Paradise in the first place? If you go to heaven, are there temptations that could send you to hell THERE, TOO? And why was the Serpent allowed in Paradise, and subsequently allowed to trick Eve into eating the fruit? Why didn't God intervene if he loved man so much? All he had to do was remove the serpent, the tree, or both to ensure Eden remained unspoiled.
