Are there any sociological/psychological experiments/research along these lines...?

Is anyone aware of any sociological/psychological experiments or research that involves taking a large group of people who profess to be moral and upstanding, for example people who profess to follow a religion, who work in helping professions, who profess to closely follow the law, and so forth, and to subject that group to the knowledge of progressively more heinous crimes occurring to determine the point at which at least one of them intervenes? (The crimes wouldn't be a threat to them or anyone that they care about personally, they would occur in a detached manner.) I know of the famous stabbing case where that woman was stabbed over and over by her attacker and dozens of people just watched and didn't do anything to help her, the attacker left, then returned and finally killed her and no one did anything--are there studies similar to that event?
