Why did every sportscaster before USC vs. Texas claim USC was going for it's 3rd straight title?

USC was not going for it's 3rd it was going for it's second. One can not win a championship that it did not play for even in the BCS. IN 2003 LSU and Oklahoma played for the title. With LSU winning.
