On go karts the nut that keeps the wheel on how does it work?

When you put your wheel on your go kart you then put a lug nut on to keep the wheel on the kart but you don't put the nut on tight like a car because then the wheel won't turn but the nut stays on the cart and does not come off. How does that work what keeps it in place?
