I've had sugar gliders for about three years now, and I've never heard of it being dangerous. It is to most small animals though, so I'd stick to a recycled paper product, or aspen with no aromatic oils or chemicals. Personally, I always just used notebook paper on the bottom of my gliders cage. It was cheap, and they couldn't kick any of it out of the bottom. Make sure you have a cage with a drop-through bottom though.
